With seven days to go in this 31-day challenge, we are officially on the home stretch!
Today I want to talk about fierce females. And if Queen Bey is the first woman who came to mind for you, bonus high fives. However, I’ve decided not to dive into the painful and profound beauty that is Lemonade because I’m not convinced anyone wants to hear me fangirl all over the blog for 500+ words. (If you do, though, say the word and I 1,000% will.)
No, today I’m talking about fierce females in general. Chances are you know one. Chances are you are one.
This post suggestion was made by my dear friend Brittany. B ranks up there with oxygen, food, and shelter – AKA Things I Can’t Live Without.
When I click through B’s and my Facebook friendship (something I only learned to do thirty minutes ago…), it’s a feel-good melange of smiling photographs, the colour orange, “Get ’em, gurl!” and articles about self-care and Alpha Females.
Alpha Females. Basically, we’re unicorns.
Here’s a sassy definition according to Elite Daily contributor Gigi Engel:
The Alpha Female is a strong, majestic female. She can often be intimidating to those around her and isn’t afraid to ask for what she wants. She’s killing it in her career and has a solid group of friends to rely on.
Just as a unicorn is strong and majestic so, too, is an Alpha Female. A great job and great friends to boot? Sign me up!
The article goes on to discuss “the Perfect Man” for an Alpha Female, but because I have little interest in typecasting and Cupid’s arrow, let’s keep moving.
I sniffed out this Science of People article and loved the way that behavioural researcher and perennial nerd Vanessa Van Edwards offers up a bit of science behind Alpha Females. She even goes so far as to build a hierarchy of women that is uncomfortable to read only because of its fundamental trueness. Some days I’m an Alpha, some days I’m a Beta, and some days I’m a Nu.
I agree with Vanessa that “alpha-ness” runs along a spectrum. You might rule the roost at home but choose to maintain quiet composure at work. You might shine bright like a diamond amidst your colleagues but feel more at ease in the middle of the pack when out for drinks with your gal pals.
Wherever you fall on the spectrum – whatever degree of unicorn you might be – own it.
Vanessa also shares a few of the many, varied nicknames Alpha Females have earned over the years: connector, chatty, queen bee, bossy, control freak, and the life of the party, to name a few. Thanks to Sophia Amuroso, #GIRLBOSS has found its way to this list, too, but if I may, I’d like to digress for a moment and issue a plea:
Women of the World, please stop calling yourselves #GIRLBOSSES. You are women in charge. You are #BOSSES. When you attach gender to occupation, you widen an already gaping divide.
To all you strong, majestic unicorns out there: you are awesome. Get ’em, gurl!
